With the 2026-2027 school year for Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 19 for K-12 students and Monday, Aug. 24 for preschoolers, the need for support is evident. Families are turning to various events and programs to ease the financial burden of back-to-school preparations.
Community Events Provide Essential Resources
Several events have been organized to distribute free backpacks and school supplies, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the upcoming academic year. These events not only provide essential items but also offer a sense of community and support for families in need.
Back-to-School Fest at Washington Park
The CPS Back-to-School Fest held at Washington Park in Over-the-Rhine was a hub of activity, offering families a range of services. Attendees received free backpacks, shoes, immunizations, and sports physicals, all aimed at getting students ready for the classroom. Shauna Murphy CPS Superintendent, emphasized the district’s efforts in preparing for the new school year, stating, “The summer flies by, and CPS has been busy getting ready for this school year.”
Northern Kentucky Harvest’s Backpacks Bonanza
Across the river in CovingtonNorthern Kentucky Harvest hosted its annual Backpacks Bonanza outside St. Elizabeth Healthcare. The organization distributed more than 1,100 backpacks, bringing joy to children and relief to parents. Paul Gottbrath Board President of Northern Kentucky Harvest, shared his observations: “I see joy on the faces of the kids when they get their backpacks, and I see a lot of relief on the faces of the parents when they get them.”
Gottbrath also highlighted the growing need for such support, noting that “The need has never decreased as far as I know.” This underscores the importance of community initiatives in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by many families.
Guiding Light Mentoring and United Way of Greater Cincinnati
In NorthsideGuiding Light Mentoring and United Way of Greater Cincinnati collaborated to host a giveaway event. Chandra Matthews-Smith Chief community engagement Officer for United Way of Greater Cincinnati, remarked on the extraordinary struggles faced by some families this year: “This year seems to be an extraordinary struggle for some of the families that we talked to today.”
Timothy Lane Board Chair for Guiding Light Mentoring, emphasized the stress-relieving impact of these initiatives: “Well, in bridging the gap for us, it’s a great stress reliever to know that we’re here to provide some help, especially economically.”

Back 2 School Bash
On August 6 the Back 2 School Bash took place at the Sharefax Parking Lot in Eastgate. Families enjoyed free backpacks and school supplies, while resources lasted. This event was part of a broader effort to support local kids and ease the financial burden on parents.
Back to School Festival
The Back to School Festival on August 7 at the Ola Immigrant Welcome Center in Price Hill offered a comprehensive range of services. Guests had access to a clothing closet, free barber services, community resources, notary services, a food giveaway, legal aid, and assistance from Jobs & Family Services. Pre-registered participants also received school supplies, making this event a valuable resource for families.
Back-to-School Resource Fair
On August 8 the Back-to-School Resource Fair was held at the Hamilton County ESC in Mt Healthy Heights. Families accessed free school supplies, hygiene items, health screenings, and valuable community resources. This event aimed to help students start the school year strong, providing essential tools and support.
Back to School Day of Fun
Also on August 8 the Back to School Day of Fun took place at the Zion Temple First Pentecostal Church in North Avondale. Guests enjoyed an epic day of fun, food, fellowship, and family, featuring free games and activities, music and entertainment, hands-on social-emotional learning experiences, and community connection.
These events, along with many others, highlight the collective effort of the Cincinnati community to support families and ensure that every student has the resources they need to succeed in the upcoming school year.
