The Fairlawn Police Department has introduced an innovative approach to community policing with the launch of their new bike patrol unit. This initiative aims to foster stronger connections with residents, particularly younger community members, by making officers more accessible and approachable.

At the end of last year, the department allocated funds to purchase two pedal-assist bikes equipped with red and blue flashing lights, a siren, an AED a LifeVac anti-choking device and a first aid kit. These bikes allow officers to navigate parks, neighborhoods, and other areas that are difficult to reach with traditional cruisers.

The Benefits of Bike Patrols

The bike patrol unit offers several advantages over traditional patrol methods. Officers on bikes can respond more quickly to incidents in crowded or congested areas. Additionally, the reduced size and noise of the bikes make them less intimidating to community members, especially children.

Patrolman Brandon Rotili of the Fairlawn Police Department noted, “They are surprised. They normally see us in our cruisers, which are big and sometimes intimidating. When they see us on the bike, similar to what they are riding, they love it. They enjoy it.”

Community Engagement and Rewards

To further engage with the community, the Fairlawn Police Department has partnered with Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. Officers on bike patrol will hand out coupons for a free scoop of ice cream to children who are seen wearing a helmet while riding their bikes. This incentive encourages safe biking practices among young residents.

Officers have reported that patrolling on bikes is a welcome change from the cruiser, especially on pleasant days. The bike patrols not only improve community relations but also provide officers with a more enjoyable and dynamic way to perform their duties.

Future Plans for the Bike Patrol Unit

The Fairlawn Police Department plans to expand the bike patrol unit in the future by adding more bikes to the fleet. This expansion will allow for increased coverage and the ability to respond to more community needs.
