The tranquil streets of Green Township, Ohio were disrupted on a Saturday afternoon when a 45-minute chase ended in a deadly confrontation. A 23-year-old man, identified as Timothy Cromwell was shot and killed by two Cincinnati police officers and one Green Township officer following an abduction and high-speed pursuit.

The incident began around 4 p.m. when officers received a call reporting a woman being abducted from her job at Mercy Health – West Hospital. Cromwell was driving the victim’s car on Werk Road when officers spotted him near Glenway Avenue. What followed was a tense chase that culminated in a tragic outcome.

The Chase and the Confrontation

The chase began when Cromwell led officers on a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Green Township. The pursuit ended in front of Our Lady of the Visitation School on Boudinot Avenue and Ramona Avenue. Cromwell crashed the vehicle and exited the car, approaching officers while holding a knife.

Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Cromwell refused, leading officers to open fire. The incident was captured on video, showing Cromwell lunging at officers with the knife before being shot. The Interim Cincinnati Police Chief Adam Hennie provided details of the confrontation, highlighting the dangerous situation officers faced.

The Victim’s Account and Cromwell’s Mental Health

The victim described Cromwell’s state of mind during the ordeal, revealing that he had no intention of going to jail. According to Hennie, Cromwell made comments suggesting he intended to commit suicide by cop. “The victim said that while they were driving around in the car and as he was holding the knife, that he was telling her that he was not going to go to jail,” Hennie stated.

Cromwell’s family also spoke with police, describing his struggles with mental illness. They relayed that Cromwell had previously made comments about not going to jail and that if he were to die, it would be by the police. Hennie confirmed that Cromwell was suffering from multiple mental health issues and had a history of criminal behavior.

The Aftermath and Investigations

The incident has sparked investigations by both the Citizen Complaint Authority and the Cincinnati Police Department. The victim and Cromwell knew each other, although the nature of their relationship has not been disclosed. The community, particularly residents near the scene, expressed shock at the unexpected violence in their quiet neighborhood.

Randy Stockman a neighbor who lives near where the shooting occurred, heard the gunfire and described the event as unexpected. “It went about 5 or 6 shots I heard and then basically that was about it,” Stockman said. He noted that the area is typically quiet, with many expensive homes, making the incident all the more surprising.

As investigations continue, the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health and law enforcement interactions.
