The Hughes football program has surged to a flawless 7-0 record this season, a milestone not achieved in at least 26 years. After a dominant 38-6 victory over Taft on Friday night, the team has outscored its last two foes by a combined 82-12 margin. Such a run has propelled the Big Red to the No. 7 spot in the Division III, Region 12 computer-points rankings, according to analyst Joe Eitel. While the scoreboard tells one story, coach Jalen Engleman insists the real triumph lies beyond the field, rooted in a philosophy that seeks to leave a lasting imprint on Hughes for generations.
An unprecedented 7-0 start
Entering the season with modest expectations, the Big Red quickly dispelled doubts. The opening win set the tone, and each subsequent game reinforced a pattern of offensive firepower and defensive sturdiness. The most recent clash against Taft showcased a 38-6 triumph, expanding the point differential to a staggering 82-12 across two games. This statistical dominance has drawn attention from regional analysts, earning Hughes a spot among the top contenders in the playoff projection models. Yet, Engleman emphasizes that numbers are only a piece of the puzzle; the culture being forged in the locker room matters more than any tally.
Coach Engleman’s vision for lasting impact
Appointed head coach in January, former 2019 Winton Woods graduate Jalen Engleman described taking the reins at Hughes as a “dream come true.” His ascent from middle-school leader to high-school head coach has been marked by a clear, values-driven agenda. In a Saturday morning text, Engleman wrote, “We want our players to understand that they’re building something that can impact Hughes for years to come.” He adds, “I’m extremely proud of them, grateful for our coaching staff and thankful for everyone who has supported us along the way.” The coach’s message underscores humility, hunger, and a week-by-week focus, urging his athletes to stay grounded amid the rising hype.
Building a culture of accountability and humility
According to Engleman, the key to success has been the team’s wholehearted buy-in to a shared culture. “They’ve bought into our culture, they’ve had each other accountable, and they’ve continued to work even when things haven’t been easy,” he explained. The accountability mantra permeates practice drills, game preparations, and even off-field interactions. Engleman also praised his staff, stating, “Our coaching staff has also done a tremendous job of putting these young men in position to be successful and keeping everybody focused on the bigger picture.” This collaborative environment, he believes, fuels the collective drive that propels the team beyond mere athletic achievement.
Community backing and the athletic director’s perspective
The surge has galvanized the entire Hughes community. Stands are consistently full, and alumni, parents, and local supporters rally behind the players each Friday night. Athletic director Andrew Mueller noted the historical significance, admitting research is still underway to confirm whether a 7-0 start has ever occurred in school records prior to the 1990s. Mueller added, “We have a great group of young men who have been in our program for four-plus years. They are buying in to what Head Coach Jalen Engleman is teaching.” He highlighted the coach’s long-standing relationship with the athletes, recalling his tenure as the middle-school head coach, which has cultivated deep trust and respect.
Looking ahead: the Oct. 10 showdown
With momentum building, Hughes prepares for a pivotal matchup against Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy (CCPA) on Oct. 10. CCPA also enters the game unbeaten at 7-0, marking the first perfect season in its program’s history after a 26-21 win over Dayton Christian. The clash promises to be a showcase of two flawless squads vying for regional supremacy. Engleman remains measured, promising to “stay humble, stay hungry and take it one week at a time.” As the Big Red eye the upcoming duel, the emphasis remains on sustaining the culture that has turned a historic winning streak into a community movement.
