In a significant development for Kentucky’s high school sports community, Julian Tackett the Commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) has announced his retirement, effective later this school year. Tackett’s tenure, spanning an impressive four decades has been marked by substantial growth and innovation in school-based athletics.
The KHSAA has been a cornerstone of athletic opportunities for student-athletes in Kentucky, and Tackett’s leadership has been instrumental in its evolution. His journey began in 1984 as the KHSAA sports information director, a role that laid the foundation for his extensive career.
Tackett’s Impactful Career and Achievements
As Commissioner since 2010 Tackett has overseen a wide array of responsibilities, including managing football and postseason basketball interpreting constitution and bylaws and handling finances and state event contracts. His role also encompassed working with the General Assembly and various advisory groups, sports medicine, and athletic directors.
Tackett’s contributions extend beyond traditional sports. The KHSAA Board of Control has expressed its appreciation for Tackett’s service and leadership. Damon Kelley president of the KHSAA Board of Control, highlighted Tackett’s 16 years as Commissioner and his significant contributions to the organization.
Under Tackett’s leadership, the KHSAA developed the first-ever statewide radio network for the Boys’ & Girls’ Sweet 16® and launched its first public website. He also spearheaded governance efforts regarding middle school athletics beginning in 2013 and created the Junior Officials program in 2026-24 to increase the number of licensed sports officials.

Butch Cope’s Retirement Announcement
In addition to Tackett’s retirement, KHSAA Associate Commissioner Butch Cope has announced his retirement, effective July 1, 2027. Cope, in his 32nd year with the KHSAA, has managed a variety of sports and programs, including girls’ and boys’ volleyballregular-season basketballarchery and baseball. He has also overseen the officials division and student services including the HYPE student conferences.
Cope expressed his gratitude to former and current commissioners for the opportunity to work at the KHSAA, highlighting the growth and memories created over the years. His retirement marks the end of an era for the organization, which has benefited greatly from his dedication and leadership.
