The Journey to Reopening
The Mariemont Theatre’s story took a dramatic turn at the end of January when the building’s owner evicted the previous operator, Theatre Management Corporation. Given until the start of March to vacate, the theatre was left empty, its marquee bare, and its interior stripped of essential equipment. Allyson West, founder of Cindependent, recalled finding rows of empty floor space where theatre chairs once sat and the original marquee letters tucked away in a box.
“Everything that we need to play movies in the Mariemont Theatre was taken out of the theatre,” West said. Since taking over, Cindependent has been diligently working to replace the removed items, including new screens, an audio system, and even a popcorn machine. The theatre will feature five new projectors, ensuring that the visuals will be crisper than ever.
A Community’s Investment
The success of the fundraising campaign is a testament to the community’s deep connection to the theatre. “Reaching our Phase I fundraising goal is an incredible milestone,” said Cindependent Board Member Cheryl Rose. “The Mariemont Theatre is reopening because our community believed in it. From generous donors who invested in its future to volunteers who rolled up their sleeves to scrub, clean, and reassemble chairs, every contribution helped bring us to this point.”
The theatre has been a staple in the community since its opening in December 1938. Its reopening will not only bring back a beloved venue but also create new job opportunities as Cindependent plans to hire staff to help bring the historic cinema back to life.
