In the summer of 2026, Danielle Levine and her daughter had their hearts set on a season of baking. As the treasurer of her high school’s baking club, Levine’s daughter was eager to test new recipes. However, their plans were put on hold when their 3-year-old wall oven failed, marking the beginning of a series of frustrations that could have been avoided with proper research.
The oven had functioned well for its first year, but in it suddenly stopped working when the fuse blew. Despite repairs, the oven continued to malfunction over the next year and a half. Levine later discovered that other owners had reported similar issues with the oven’s wiring overheating. The final straw came when the oven failed right in front of their repair technician.
Common appliance issues and the power of reviews
Angie Hicks, co-founder of the home services site Angi emphasizes the importance of checking reviews for repeated problems before purchasing any appliance. Common themes in reviews can reveal underlying issues that may not be immediately apparent. “Especially if you’re seeing common themes in the review, you want to understand that,” Hicks said. “Then when you start your shopping, you’ve kind of narrowed down the field at that point.”
Hicks also advises consumers to read the manufacturer’s warranty carefully. Understanding the warranty duration and coverage can help determine whether an extended warranty is worth the investment. “I always start with the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the appliance. How long does it last? Is it a couple of years? Is it four years? How long does the appliance last?” Hicks said. She cautions that “The extended warranty is only as good as what it covers. If it doesn’t cover those common things, it may not be worth the investment.”
Seeking expert advice for reliable appliances
After her experiences, Levine sought guidance from her repair technician, who recommended reputable brands that rarely require repairs. This approach not only helped her choose a more reliable oven but also directed her to companies known for excellent customer service. “Talked to our repair person who not only recommended a couple of brands that are very reputable that he never sees repairs on,” she said, “but also good places to go with companies that have really good customer service that support their customers.”
A major appliance should last for years, if not more than a decade. Investing time in research before purchasing can save consumers from costly repairs and frustrations. By checking reviews, understanding warranties, and seeking expert advice, buyers can make informed decisions that lead to long-lasting and reliable appliances.
